5 Video Response Tools for Students

Recent tools have made it very easy for students (and teachers) to create and share video responses for projects and assessments. These are just a few tools you can use on multiple devices and operating systems.

Flipgrid is the leading video discussion platform used by millions of PreK to PhD educators, students, families, and organizations in more than 150 countries! Create a Grid (that's your classroom or group), add Topics to spark the discussion, and your community builds a dialogue as they share short video responses. (source flipgrid.com)

FlipGrid might just be the most popular tool right now to capture video responses from students. A simple search on Twitter for #FlipGridFever shows how teachers from all over the country are using FlipGrid in their classroom.

FlipGrid can be used with the following devices: iPad, Phones, Chromebook, Windows Computer, Mac Computer (devices must have working webcam)

ScreenCastify is one of the most popular Chrome browser extensions that allow the user to create screen recordings. There is a setting in ScreenCastify that will allow students to use just the webcam of the laptop or Chromebook to record themselves reading, singing, or giving their video response to an assignment. These videos can be automatically saved to the students' Google Drive folder and then uploaded to YouTube and/or Google Classroom.

ScreenCastify can only be used with the Chrome browser on Chromebooks, Mac or PC computer / laptops that have a web cam.

Swivl is a wonderful tool for capturing in class lessons and student conversations. The Swivl app is free and you can sign up for a free Swivl Cloud account. To get the full extent of the Swivl tool you need to use the app with the Swivl Robot.

You can however use the app without the robot.  With a free Swivl Cloud account you can connect an iPad/iPhone to one other device (iPad/Chromebook/Laptop) and capture two class conversations or centers simultaneously. With your free Swivl Cloud account you have unlimited space to store your videos and you can download the video to your computer if you need to edit them.

To start you must have an iPad or iPhone and the free Swivl app. To use the multi-camera feature you must have an iPad or iPhone, and can connect another iPad, iPhone, Chromebook, Mac or PC laptop (with webcam & microphone)

The Google Classroom Mobile App has a way to record a video and attach that video directly to an assignments in Google Classroom.

Alice Keeler has a wonder blog post about this cool feature and I created a video (see below) that shows how a student would use the tool with Google Classroom.

This feature is only available on the Google Classroom mobile apps for iOS or Android devices.

Padlet is a tool that teachers can use to create a shared and interactive pin-board. Students can add text, pictures, links, and video. Padlet can be used as a place for students to post reflective videos and others that have access to the Padlet board can reply / respond to those student created videos.

Students must use the Padlet mobile app in order to add video to the Padlet board. The video below shows you how this can be done.

This feature only works with the mobile Padlet app on iOS or Android devices.
